NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Fossil Fuels----Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas have been a highly prized energy source for centureies.  Electricity was 1st produced using coal in the 1880's.  Since that time, fossil fuels have been the dominent source of energy for electical production, transportation, and industries in the United States.

All fossil fuels are formed from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago, (before dinosaurs).  When these plants and animals died, their remains decomposed and were eventually buried under tons of soil and rock.  Heat and pressure over time, caused this organic matter to turn to COAL (solid), PETROLIUM (liquid gas), and NATURAL GAS (vapor).

COULD WE DEPLETE THE FOSSIL FUELS?

YES.  Todays Fossil Fuel resources began to form so long ago, when much of the land was covered by swamps and the climate was very warm.

These lush conditions are not nearly as widespread today, and Fossil Fuels will not form in a useful amount of time.

If we don't conserve these natural resources, we might run out of them.
